Officer Training

Treasurer Training

Practical guidance for lodge treasurers — finances, reports, records, and the duties of the station.

Course Overview

What This Course Covers

Built for current and incoming lodge treasurers.

The duties of a lodge Treasurer are few, yet they sit at the center of the lodge's financial life. This course grounds current and incoming Treasurers in the actual charge of the office: paying authorized bills, keeping the lodge's checkbook and accounts, and ensuring every dollar flowing in and out is recorded accurately.

As the lodge's chief financial officer, the Treasurer is responsible for paying all bills authorized by the Master and the bylaws, maintaining the operating checkbook, savings accounts, and investments. All funds — incoming and outgoing — should pass through the Treasurer so a complete record of the lodge's financial transactions is preserved. He works with the trustees to confirm expenditures are properly approved, coordinates with investment managers under the direction of the Master and trustees, accepts deposits from the Secretary and posts them to the chart of accounts, and makes deposits into pre-paid accounts such as postage. At least annually he prepares financial statements in conformity with generally accepted accounting principles and in the Grand Lodge's required format, has them reviewed or audited by a committee appointed by the Master, and submits them to the Grand Lodge by December 1st. He also ensures federal and state tax forms — IRS Form 990N, 990EZ, or full 990 depending on gross receipts — are filed on time, with copies sent to the Grand Treasurer's Office, and works closely with the lodge Auditor to ensure all funds and accounts are accurately depicted.
